American Le Mans Series

American Le Mans Classification

Each year the attention of millions of viewers all over the world is focused on what happens in the French region of La Sarthe. Running almost uninterrupted since it's inception in 1923 is the famous 24 hours of Le Mans, without doubt one of the greatest and prestigious motor racing events in the world.

In 1999 Dr. Don Panoz signed an agreement with the "Automobile Club de l'Ouest" the organizers of the 24 hours of Le Mans to create, using the same rules, the American Le Mans Series. For the first time in many years, both American and European cars could now run together in races on both sides of the Atlantic.

The new series started with a program of only eight races, all of them at tracks in the United States, but with media coverage unprecedented in the history of sportscar racing in the USA, which along with local and international television and the Internet, assured it's successful debut.

The 2001 season saw racing on two continents. There should have been four but both Australia and then Malaysia (due to the events of September) were cancelled. Racing with the most sophisticated sports cars in the world and the most select group of international specialists driving them, the American Le Mans Series had already become the fastest growing of any professional motorsport series.
